Here are some South African payment gateways that you can add to your website so that people can pay you online.

Processing of credit cards:
This is the currency of online payment. Credit cards are still a popular way of paying for goods and services online. To be able to use this payment option on your e-commerce website to accept VISA or MasterCard, you’ll have to get an online merchant account. You can register for an online merchant account with your local bank. This is a long and frustrating exercise. To be able to process payments from all major credit cards on your site, you’ll have to register online merchant accounts with two separate banks. Reason: The majority of banks only deal with some of the credit cards involved. The disadvantages are cost and red tape. The solution is an Internet payment gateway service. The gateway verifies information, transfers requests, and authorises credit cards in real time.

How does a payment gateway process transactions from a shopping cart?

1. An online customer places items in a shopping cart.
2. When they finish shopping, they click on "check out" and enter their billing information.
3. The customer is transferred to a secure payment gateway.
4. The payment gateway then transmits to the processor The processor transfers the information to the bank that issued the credit card or EFT. Then verify the card and check to make sure that the requested amount is available on the card or EFT.
5. The process takes 2-4 seconds from the time that the customer entered their information and, on approval, is sent back to the e-commerce website where the customer's order page details are displayed.
6. The payment gateway sends the customer's approval code back to your website, where the purchase was made.
7. The payment gateway emails the customer a payment receipt and the website emails you, the website owner.

Whether you are sending or receiving money from your friends and family or paying for online transactions PayPal always comes at the top of the list of online processors. But it is not the only option for online transactional dealings. Since March 25 PayPal has entered the South African market and closed a partnership with FNB bank this is good news for South Africans wanting to do international online e-commerce however there is a few disadvantages you need to open a FNB account and that will cost you about R75.00 per month and you cannot charge in Rands only in US Dollars.

This is a real disadvantage if your target market is South Africans because they don’t all have PayPal accounts and it will seem strange if your domain charge in USD Dollars but if you trade international then it will not be an disadvantage.due to South African Reserve Bank foreign exchange controls) using a PayPal account and withdrawing your cash makes it a difficult process.
